Cape Sounion – The Perfect Day Trip from Athens

If you only have one day to escape Athens, make it Cape Sounion. It’s one of those places that captures everything I love about Greece — the sparkling blue sea, peaceful countryside, and a temple standing proudly on a cliff, watching over the Aegean.

I’ve done this trip more times than I can count, especially when friends visit. The drive down the Athens Riviera is beautiful, passing seaside towns and golden beaches, and the moment the Temple of Poseidon comes into view is always unforgettable. Whether you go for the mythology, the sunset, or just to breathe by the sea, Sounion never disappoints.

It’s an easy day trip from Athens — you can go by bus, car, or guided tour — and below I’ve shared everything you need to know to plan your visit, from transport to the best time to go.

How to get from Athens to Cape Sounion

There are a few ways to get to Cape Sounion from Athens — by bus, guided tour, or car — and which one you choose really depends on your time, budget, and how independent you want to be. I’ve tried all of them at some point, so here’s what to expect from each option.

Guided Tour to Cape Sounion (Easiest Option)

If you want the most effortless and scenic way to visit Cape Sounion, a guided tour is definitely the best choice. Everything is organized for you — pickup, transfers, and timing — so all you have to do is enjoy the ride along the Athens Riviera.

The tour usually makes a short stop at the ancient Thorikos Theatre, one of the oldest surviving theaters in Greece, before continuing to the Temple of Poseidon.

You’ll arrive well before sunset, with plenty of time to walk around the site, take photos, and stop at the café for a coffee or snack before the magic hour begins.

As the sun dips into the Aegean, the marble columns of the temple glow gold — it’s one of those moments that stays with you.

KTEL Bus from Athens to Sounion

If you’re on a tight budget, the KTEL bus is the cheapest way to reach Cape Sounion — a return ticket costs €12.50. Buses leave from Plateia Aigyptou in Pedion tou Areos, but schedules are limited, so it’s important to plan ahead.

To be honest, I don’t really recommend this option unless you’re traveling in summer, when the weather and daylight make it easier. In that case, take a morning bus, spend the day swimming and relaxing at the beach, enjoy a meal in a seaside taverna, and then stay for the sunset before catching the last bus back to Athens.

It’s a long day, but if you plan it right, it can still be a lovely (and very local) experience.

Hop-On Hop-Off & Cape Sounion Sunset Tour

If you want flexibility without having to plan everything yourself, the Hop-On Hop-Off & Cape Sounion Tour is a great option. The two-day ticket gives you unlimited access to the city’s four routes — Athens, Piraeus, Glyfada, and Vouliagmeni — plus an evening trip to Cape Sounion for sunset.

You’ll drive along the Athenian Riviera before reaching the Temple of Poseidon, perched dramatically above the sea. There’s enough time to explore the site, listen to the stories of Poseidon and King Aegeus, grab a coffee, and watch the sun set over the Aegean.

The tour includes transfers from central Athens, Wi-Fi on board, and multilingual commentary. It’s a relaxed, all-in-one way to see both Athens and Sounion at your own pace.

Private Tour to Cape Sounion

If you want to visit Cape Sounion at your own pace, a private tour is the most comfortable option. Your driver can tailor the day to your interests — whether that’s stopping for photos along the Athens Riviera, swimming at Vouliagmeni Lake, or enjoying a long seaside lunch before heading to the Temple of Poseidon for sunset.

It’s ideal if you prefer a relaxed day without fixed schedules or large groups. The drive itself is scenic and peaceful, and arriving at the temple with plenty of time to explore before sunset makes the day feel effortless.

Driving to Cape Sounion

If you already have a car, driving to Cape Sounion is a beautiful and easy trip. The route follows the Athens Riviera, passing seaside towns like Vouliagmeni, Varkiza, and Legrena, with plenty of spots to stop for a swim, coffee, or photos along the way.

It takes about 70–80 minutes from central Athens, depending on traffic, and parking is available right by the Temple of Poseidon. I wouldn’t rent a car just for this trip — it’s not really worth the cost — but if you have access to one, the drive is absolutely lovely, especially in late afternoon light.

The History and Myth of the Temple of Poseidon

The Temple of Poseidon was built around 440 BC to honor the god of the sea. Standing high on a cliff 70 meters above the Aegean, it once guided sailors returning home to Athens. Its Doric columns, carved from local marble, have withstood centuries of wind and salt — and the view is still as breathtaking as it must have been in ancient times.

According to Greek mythology, this is where King Aegeus leaped to his death after mistaking his son Theseus’s black sails for a sign of defeat. The sea below took his name — the Aegean Sea.

Today, the site remains one of the most romantic and symbolic places in Greece, where history, myth, and sunset light all meet.
